Commissioner Orientation
Commissioner training starts with an overview for those who are new to Scouting and those who are new to commissioner service. New commissioner training begins with the following e-learning sessions.


Unit Commissioner Basic Training
This training examines what a Commissioner is, what a Commissioner does
and how a Commissioner does it. At the end of this training each participant will:

  • Understand the four-function concept of council and district operations
  • Understand the commissioner unit service role in supporting units
  • Understand the methods and steps of good unit program planning
  • Understand commissioner priorities and how to be an effective leader yourself

Roundtable Basic Training
This course is designed to help roundtable ADC's and Commissioners conduct successfuls roundtables and forums. At the end of this training, each participant will:

  • Understand the purpose and importance of this monthly training
  • Know where to find the resource materials for the "new" methods
  • Share program ideas
  • Understand the staff required and how to recruit them

New-Unit Commissioner Basic Training
Not to be confused with Unit Commissioner Basic, this training is for Commissioners who are assigned to new units. At the end of this training, participants will:

  • Learn the definition and role of the New-Unit Commissioner
  • Understand how to serve and support new units
  • Learn how to combine service to new units with the Annual Touchpoints

District Commissioner & Assistant District Commissioner Basic Training
This basic training is geared toward the new District Commissioner and Assistant District Commissioners. At the end of this training each participant will:

  • Understand the history of commissioner service
  • Understand the types of commissioners and how to organize a staff
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a District Commissioner and Assistant District Commissioner

The College of Commissioner Science is advanced training for all levels of Commissioners. This fun activity allows Commissioners to earn "degrees" while learning more about their roles.

Philmont Training Center
The national commissioner conferences that take place each summer at the Philmont Training Center near Cimarron, New Mexico, offer commissioners:
